Can you really make money from your favorite things to do? Yes, that’s the answer. In just a few easy steps, you can turn your hobby into a steady source of income.
They say:
“If you do what you love, you’ll never have to work again.”
Imagine getting up in the morning and being excited about what the day will bring.
And if you want to, you can turn your hobby into a real business that makes money.
After all, who wouldn’t want to make money doing something they love?
Profitable hobbies that actually make money
When it comes to making money, not all hobbies are the same. There are a lot of hobbies out there, but only a few have been proven to make money.
Drawing
Do you like to get lost in a painting with brushes and colors? Or draw for hours on your iPad Pro and make beautiful pictures with?
Here’s a secret: the idea that artists are always poor is no longer true. Today, if you’re creative and good at graphic design or illustration, you can use those skills to make money. You don’t even have to sell your original art for that to happen.
Prints for sale
Your drawings can be printed and sold on. And your prints can go on many different things, like t-shirts, greeting cards, notebooks, and canvases. This will let you sell the same drawing more than once, maybe even a hundred or a thousand times! Selling prints is a good way to make money.
Just look at, who couldn’t keep up with the amount of original art she was selling on Etsy. That’s when she decided to sell prints, which gave her a new way to grow her business.
Or, who used social media and connections to turn her love of drawing into a successful business.
Illustrator
You could also work as a freelance illustrator to make extra money.
A great place to start is by making a portfolio on Instagram. You can post examples of your work, and if someone likes your style, they can hire you for projects like making avatars or drawing custom portraits. In fact, many small businesses in the US hire freelance graphic designers to help them with marketing materials, logos, and their online presence.
Teaching
Another choice is to teach art. On sites like, you can teach kids online. Or, you can make your own online course using sites like or.
Tip: You can get more people to follow you on social media by making art, sharing art tips, or both. Then, make a course that people can take online and sell it to them. This is a great way to passively make money from your art!
Writing
Writing is by far my most profitable hobby! After all, you are reading something that I wrote. That’s right! There are many ways to make writing a profitable side job or even a full-time job if you enjoy it.
Writing for pay
Working as a freelance writer is the easiest way to get started. All you have to do is write articles for other people or publications. You can use sites like and to look for work. Or, you can talk to the people who run the blogs directly.
Blogging for money
If you don’t want to sell your writing but are passionate enough to work on your own project, you can. In less than 2 years, I turned my small hobby, Gathering Memories, into a six-figure business.
I didn’t know anything about writing or marketing online, but I had a strong desire to share how I was building the life of my dreams.
There are a number of:
- Display ads
- Sponsorships for brands
- Selling things or providing services
- If you don’t want to deal with setting up your own blog, you can checkout blogs where anyone can publish their writing online. You can join them and make money that way.
Ebooks
If you want to write books, you can get your own ebook published.
Using is the best way to do that. After you’ve finished writing your ebook, you can create an account and self-publish it for free.
If you want to write fiction ebooks, you should build an online audience before you publish your first book. You can do this by making an or about fiction writing and joining, a group of YouTube vloggers who talk about books.
A lot of them have written books that have been published. One of them is, who wrote the book Zenith, which she wrote with Lindsay Cummings.
And don’t forget that Fifty Shades of Grey was first self-published by an unproven writer who had talked about writing it.
Reading
Who doesn’t like getting into bed with a good book and cuddling up? Wouldn’t it be great if you could make money by reading?
There are places online where people can get paid to read and review books. You will have to write one free review for Online Book Club to see if you are a good fit. Once you’re a member, you can make up to $60 per book. Also, it sends you books for free.
And if you always find mistakes in everything you read, why not work as a proofreader to make some extra cash? Proofreaders look over the final version of edited books, articles, and web content to make sure there are no mistakes.
You can start by looking on upwork and fiverr for jobs that pay little. When you have more experience, you can find proofreading jobs that pay more. Once Caitlin from proofread anywhere had worked part-time for a while, she was able to make $43,000 a year.
